Treadmill Running: How to Get Accurate Data in Ascend

Treadmill runs are one of the most common sources of bad training data.


If your data is wrong, Ascend will misinterpret your training and your running plan will adapt incorrectly.


The goal is simple: Get distance and incline as accurate as possible when uploading treadmill runs to Ascend.


The Problem with Treadmills


When you run indoors:


  • Your watch has no GPS

  • Distance is estimated based on previous treadmill runs

  • Incline is missing entirely


This leads to:


  • incorrect pace

  • incorrect running impact

  • misleading training scores (running impact & speed)


The Golden Rule: If your distance or incline is wrong, the entire session is wrong. Aim to fix this whenever you run indoors.


Best Ways to Get Accurate Treadmill Data


1. Use a Smart Treadmill (Best Option)


If your treadmill connects to Zwift Run or similar:


  • Use Zwift Run (free). Read how to here

  • It records:

    • exact distance & pace

    • incline changes

    • heart rate (if linked)


This gives you all the data you need for your treadmill run and syncs directly to Strava.


Tip: Avoid uploading both Zwift and watch files to Strava, keep only one.


2. Use a .FIT File Fixer


Garmin’s “calibrate and save”:


  • only improves future runs

  • does not fix the workout you just did

Allows you to:


  • correct distance

  • add total incline

  • fix pace (it won’t be perfect but often good enough)


Simple workflow


  1. Export your .FIT file

  2. Upload it to the tool

  3. Enter correct distance and total incline

  4. Download the corrected file

  5. Upload to Strava

  6. Delete the original activity

 

If your distance is correct but incline is missing (and was constant):


In Ascend you can:


  • Keep the Strava activity (as long as distance is accurate)

  • Edit the activity in Ascend (pen icon next to “link workouts”)

  • Add the gradient (%) manually


Why Incline Matters


Uphill running creates less mechanical impact. If incline is missing, running impact will be wrong in Ascend.


Common Mistakes to Avoid


❌ Relying on watch calibration alone

❌ Not correcting for incline

❌ Keeping both original and corrected activities in Strava

Before syncing to Ascend:


✔ Distance matches treadmill

✔ Pace looks realistic

✔ Incline added (if relevant)

✔ Only one version of the activity exists in Strava

Treadmill data doesn’t need to be perfect, but it needs to paint a decent picture of your workout. If you regularly run indoors, make sure your setup reflects: (1)  true distance and (2) actual incline.

Use Zwift Run when possible OR fix distance first, then add incline if you can.
